Sorry, Mrs. Hirzel has been a little behind with the wonky schedule this past week.  Here is all the information on what we covered this past week.


  • Students took the Poetry Anticipation Guide
  • Students were given Wicked Word Wall Poetry Handout.
  • Students were given the How to Read a Poem Article from http://www.shmoop.com/
  • Students will have a wicked word wall quiz on Wednesday, October 24
  • Students were given the Coming of Age Poetry Packet
  • Students read and discussed the following poems:  "On My First Son," "My Papa's Waltz," "Before the Birth of One of her Children," "The History Teacher," and "Cross."
  • Students discussed and focused on how the poems successfully used poetic devices, what the literal and figurative meanings of the poems were, as well as how they connected to our quarterly theme of coming of age.
  • Weekend Homework:  Read and annotate "Out, Out--" by Robert Frost

  • Students were handed back their revised Kite Runner In-Class Essay (20 points)
  • Students were handed back their Siddhartha Ch. 5-10 response paper (5 points)
  • Students went over Siddhartha study guide
  • Students had final discussion over Siddhartha 
                 -The meaning of Siddhartha's name
                 -The symbolism of the smile
                 -The difference between internal and external learning/education
                -The connections and differences of the paths to enlightenment of the major characters

In-Class:
  • Now that we have finished the book, students and teacher had an in-depth round-circle discussion on major issues of the novel:

    -Foreshadowing of Young Siddhartha and Siddhartha's relationship
    -Qualities Young Siddhartha and Siddhartha share
     -Effect of upbringing on characters
    -Discussion of love in the novel
     -General discussion of fondness/disappointment of the novel

HW:
  • Students will look at teh four people who have received enlightenment in the novel.  They will be asked to compare and contrast their journeys.
  • Wednesday/Thursday: Siddhartha Test 

      -Wednesday is Multiple Choice/True and False/Fill-In/Short Answer/Matching
      -Thursday is essay questions.  Essays:
            *Choose one chapter and connect it to the Eightfold Path
            *Choose one essential question from the quarter and argue how Siddhartha     answers the question

 
In-Class:
  • Students will turn in their response papers (5 points)
  • Students will conduct Socratic Seminar over Ch. 10


HW:
  • Finish reading Siddhartha 
  • Write 5 Socratic Seminar Questions
 
In-Class:
  • Teacher took time to discuss ideas for Independent Reading Projects
  • Students conducted Socratic Seminar for Ch. 9


HW:
  • Read Chapter 10 "The Son"
  • 5 Socratic Seminar Questions
  • If not turned in previously in the week, students must turn in their response paper tomorrow

  • Students discussed the meaning of happiness and success
  • Students discussed the difference between wisdom and knowledge

  • Read Chapter 9 "The Ferryman"

n-Class:
  • Students discussed the definition and meaning of Banned/Challenged Books
  • Students played the Banned Books Guessing Game:  Students went around the room and looked at paper bags with books underneath them.  On their answer sheet, students tried to match the banned/challenged books to the reason why it was banned.  
  • Teacher and students went through the answers and the team with the most correct won candy!
  • Mrs. Hirzel passed out their Independent Reading Project for Quarter 1.

  • Five Socratic Seminar Questions
