Wednesday 3/20
  • Go over Thesis Statement PowerPoint
  • Write "I Statements" ("I am writing about _______ in order to prove/show_______)
  • Mrs. Hirzel will check "I Statements" before the end of class
  • HW:  Turn "I Statements" into a formal thesis, do research


Thursday 3/21
  • Discuss Outlining and Receive Outline Handout
  • Teacher will help students with questions on thesis and outlining
  • HW: Create sentence outline of main points (include thesis at the top)


Friday 3/22
  • Discussion Section 2 of The University of Chicago Writing Guide
  • Do Animal Farm Thesis Activity
  • HW:  Expand your outline to include your textual evidence & analysis (with MLA in-text citations)  EXAMPLE


Monday 3/25
  • Teacher will check Expanded Outlines
  • Teachers and students will work together to make expanded outline into paragraph
  • HW:  Introductory Paragraph and first point expanded into paragraph form (draft), Come in with 1-3 questions about your paper for private conference


Tuesday & Wednesday 3/26- 3/27
  • In-Library
  • Teacher will hand back last two papers and students will analyze what they need to improve on for this paper
  • Peer Review
  • Students will continue drafting process
  • Teacher will have conferences with students individually 
  • HW:  Animal Farm Draft due Tuesday we return

Now that we have read Ch. 1-5 of Animal Farm and completed our Russian Magazine assignment, it is time to truly figure out what scared Orwell so much about Totalitarianism.

Monday:
  • Students listened to Mrs. Hirzel's Slam Poem 
  • Students paired up and performed their poem to each other for critique
  • Students finished up an group performances not done of Friday
  • If time, students watched slam poetry videos
  • Homework:  Slam poetry reflection and poem due tomorrow


Tuesday-Thursday
  • Poetry Slam Competition
  • Prizes will be awarded on Thursday
  • Food and drink can be brought in Wednesday and Thursday
 
Monday:
  • In Library
  • Students came in with a typed, second draft with all poetic devices labeled (10 points)
  • Students were in the library and completed peer reviews of their poems using the Slam Poetry Peer Review Sheet
  • HW:  Come in with 2-3 questions for Mrs. Hirzel tomorrow

Tuesday:
  • In Library
  • Write a poem that is titled "Lesson Learned"
  • Students continue revising poems and have mini-conferences with Mrs. Hirzel over their slam poem

Monday:
In-Class:
  • Teacher will read "The Flowers" by Alice Walker to students checking for understanding as she reads.
  • Students will write a short reflection on the story using the following prompts: I was surprised when...  It doesn't make sense to me that...  After reading, I wonder...
  • Students will share reflection with neighbors, then with the entire class
  • Teacher and students will go over the 5 home work questions
  • Students will look up and discuss the word Myopic.  Students will answer how they believe it has a connection to the story.
  • Students will begin "The Flowers" symbolism project

Homework:  Finish “The Flowers” Symbolism Project


Tuesday:
  • Students will present symbolism project
  • Students will discuss the last line of the story
  • Students will connect Myop's moment of growing up with their own

Homework:  Students will work on their independent reading projects over break.  It is due December 3rd...a week after we get back from break.

  • Teacher and students went over the major themes of "The Garden Party" specifically focusing on the difference between innocence and experience
