In-Class:

• Check to see books are covered (2 points)
  
•  Discuss different between tone and mood:  

              -Tone (WWW): author’s attitude toward work
              -Mood(WWW):  reader’s emotional response to work

• Discuss Setting (WWW):  time and place (broad term can include historical, social, and political climate)
• Discuss Symbols (WWW): Something that stands for something else
  
•  First & Last Sentence Activity

                  o   What makes a good beginning?
                  o   What makes a good ending?
                  o   What makes a bad beginning?
                  o   What makes a bad ending?
                  o   What could they mean to a story?

•   Discuss theme/thematic statements & how they can be seen throughout whole novel

                   o   Must be a statement
                   o   Examples:  
                            §  Fate vs. Freewill (theme)
                            §  Thematic Statement:  Freewill is meaningless and fate controls all our                          destinies.  
                            §  Good vs. Evil (theme)
                            §  Thematic Statement:  If one has good intentions, one can overcome all evil within oneself.
 Homework:  

• Due Thursday: MWDS on One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest  (come in with questions tomorrow)
