Today, we will learn about the actual theater and theater experience many people would experience during Shakespeare's time.

First we will watch The Globe Video Segments from PBS.  While watching, students will attempt to answer questions

After discussing those questions, students will go on a virtual Scavenger Hunt.

Students will visit the following sites and then fill out their organizer.  Here is a checklist of all the sites.

1. Shakespeare's Globe -- Virtual Tour
2.  The Swan -- Internet Shakespeare Editions
3.  Shakepeare's Globe Theater -- 3D Model

Students will finish answering questions and then discuss as a whole class.

  • Go over Thesis Statement PowerPoint
  • Write "I Statements" ("I am writing about _______ in order to prove/show_______)
  • Mrs. Hirzel will check "I Statements" before the end of class
  • HW:  Turn "I Statements" into a formal thesis, do research

  • Discussion Section 2 of The University of Chicago Writing Guide
  • Do 1984 Thesis Activity
  • HW:  Expand your outline to include your textual evidence & analysis (with MLA in-text citations)  EXAMPLE


Monday 3/25
  • Teacher will check Expanded Outlines
  • Teachers and students will work together to make expanded outline into paragraph
  • HW:  Introductory Paragraph and first point expanded into paragraph form (draft), Come in with 1-3 questions about your paper for private conference


Tuesday & Wednesday 3/26- 3/27
  • In-Library
  • Teacher will hand back last paper and students will analyze what they need to improve on for this paper
  • Peer Review
  • Students will continue drafting process
  • Teacher will have conferences with students individually 
  • HW:  1984 Paper due Monday we return 

 
It is that time again when another Independent Reading Journal is due.
It is due on Wednesday March, 20th 2013.

Wednesday: In-Class:
  • Quick Write: Explain the significance of the quote "Who controls the past...controls the future: who controls the present controls the past" (Orwell 35)
  • Circle-Discussion over quote
  • Students discussed Winston's marriage and how B.B. controls even the union of two people
  • Students discussed how we perceive reality and how our reality is dependent and at times controlled by others
  • HW:  Read Ch. 7; 250 word response paper on a quote from Ch. 7-->explain the quote, why the author included it (author-->reader relationship), and its significance to the novel
 
Tuesday: In-Class:
  • Students worked in small groups of 5-6 discussing Ch. 5
  • Students discussed the effect of language on culture as well as why Winston woke up with "Shakespeare on his lips" (Orwell 31) 
  • As a full group, students discussed their small group discussions
  • HW: Read and annotate Ch. 6
 
Monday In-Class:
Students discussed response papers (10 points) on Ch. 4 of 1984
Students sat in a circle with teacher and made a Web of Communication using yarn

HW:  Socratic Seminar Questions Ch. 5
 
In-Class:
  • Watched Clip of the Two Minutes Hate from the movie 1984
  • Teacher handed back response papers with comments
  • Students and teacher conducted Socratic Seminar:  Students used yarn to pass around to show how the discussion went (everyone needed to have talked and least 3 times
  • HW:  Read Ch. 4 and write a response paper on the chapter
